How I Revived My Dry Skin

I have always struggled with dry skin (especially dry patches around my nose and mouth), but the winter months make it unbearable. About five years ago I started testing out different products and beauty practices. I created my own K-beauty routine, and I've managed to completely change my skin from dry to normal. No more pesky dry patches that makeup clings to! If you're like me and you have some dry skin and/or texture issues, try these tips to make your skin plump and hydrated!
Double Cleanse with a Gentle Cleanser
For those not familiar with the double cleanse method, this is the first step in any evening K-Beauty routine. The premise is that you use an oil based cleanser to first remove makeup and impurities (I use micellar water) followed by a lathering cleanser that will completely remove all of the dirt and grime. This method is GOLD. Before double cleansing, I am not sure I ever really removed all of my makeup or oil buildup from my face. I have seen a huge change in my skin since adopting this method 4 years ago.
Mia’s Picks: Bioderma Sensibio Micellar Water ($14.90), La Roche Posay Toleriane Gentle Cleanser ($14.99), Mamonde Micro Deep Lotus Cleanser ($15)
Use a Chemical Exfoliant
Raise your hand if you grew up using the St. Ives Apricot Scrub 🙋♀️ This was my go to cleanser growing up, and I know so many other people that used it as well. I figured I had dry skin so the rough flaky bits in the scrub would surely remove it? Not at all the case. Physical exfoliants like the St. Ives face wash are far too harsh on the skin to make a real difference in skin texture. Instead, it rips off the dry skin leading to redness, irritation and further dryness. If you've never used a chemical exfoliant before such as a glycolic acid, AHA or BHA, I highly recommend looking into it. Used in small quantities, chemical exfoliants gently remove built-up layers of dead cells and excess oil that can cause dull skin and blemishes. Pour the exfoliant onto a cotton pad and swipe across your whole face 1-2 times a week only in the evenings. Using chemical exfoliants during the day is not recommended as it makes your skin more vulnerable to sunburns. All in all, switching from physical to chemical exfoliants has made a tremendous difference in the texture of my skin and has removed all dryness around my nose!
Mia’s Picks: The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution ($8.70), Pixi Glow Tonic ($18), Lactic Acid 5% + HA ($6.50)
Add Oil for a Boost of Hydration
A lot of people are afraid to use oil in their skincare because they think it will be too greasy. There are two methods that I like to use that don't make my face an oil slick, but instead boost hydration when things get really dry. In the winter, I really enjoy dropping 1-2 drops of oil into my moisturizer and rubbing the mixture onto my face. Since I only use a very small amount it provides a really nice extra glow to my face as well. The other way I use oil is by putting a drop or two at the tip of my fingers and rub them together to create a little bit of heat. Then I press the oil into my skin and pat it all over my face. It really does create a nice moisture barrier and a great glow for under makeup.
Mia's Picks: Rata & Co Probiotic Face Oil ($19.50), The Ordinary Marula Oil ($9.90), The Ordinary Squalane Oil ($7.90)
Drink More Water
This really has been a game-changer with my skin. I never was much of a water drinker growing up. However in my adult life (and especially when I was pregnant) I upped my water consumption a ton. I have noticed that my face feels so much more hydrated as a result. You are what you drink (literally....our body is approximately 60% water). I try to avoid soda, juice and other sugar-y drinks because I don't want to drink my calories, but I also know that water is the best thing I can do for my complexion 😊💧
Be Consistent with Your Routine
It is so tempting to go to bed without removing your makeup or washing your face. I know that I've been guilty of doing that on more than one occasion....and I'm not proud. Even when I'm really exhausted, I try to do my full skincare routine because it really does make me feel great when I wake up the next morning. I see my skincare routine as self care; a time just for me to relax. Remember, the evening routine is just as important as the morning one, as this is when you double cleanse and rid your skin of all impurities. The only way I have revived my dry skin and kept it plump and hydrated is by keeping up with my K-Beauty routine and being very consistent in using my favorite products. I promise, after awhile, your skincare routine becomes a natural part of your every day and it is truly a treat!
