Masks are essential....but they aren't always the most makeup friendly. For me, doing my makeup every day is a way for me to express myself. It's a chance to showcase my creative side....and it just feels good. But I have definitely needed to switch up my beauty routine a bit to ensure that my makeup doesn't slide off my face when I wear a mask. Through some trial and error, I have learned some tips and tricks to keep your makeup looking fresh underneath that mask!
1. Tone down the foundation.

I work in layers when I do my makeup, but I have become very light-handed in the amount of foundation I am using. These days I honestly prefer a light tinted moisturizer or BB cream instead of a full-coverage foundation. Instead of blanking out my face, I enjoy light coverage that can just even out my skin tone.
I suggest using one pump (or a dime size amount of product) and dotting it over your face. Only put one or two dots on the chin area. Then use a foundation brush to buff it into your skin. Once you use a brush, you can bounce the product further into your skin using a beauty sponge. This ensures that the foundation is spread out very thin over your lower face.
2. Use extra powder on your chin.
When I know I am wearing a mask I tend to put on a lot of translucent powder to set the foundation. I will do a light dusting of powder all over my face after I do my foundation. Then I will apply all of my other powder products (blush, bronzer, highlighter), and then set my face with a setting spray. I let that dry down and then use a puff sponge to press in another light layer of translucent powder on my chin. My favorite translucent powders are the Coty Airspun (warning: this product has a strong baby powder scent that I don't love, but it is an amazing product), Wet n Wild Photofocus and No7 Loose Powder.
3. Love lipstick? Consider a mask bracket.

I absolutely LOVE lipstick. I have a collection that is a bit extensive. Think the Imelda Marcos of lipsticks.... Covid has been horrible for lip products this year, and I've definitely been bummed that I haven't been able to wear some of my favorite products as a result. Enter: The Mask Bracket.
Yes it looks a little bit Hannibel Lector-y....BUT...you can wear any lipstick you want underneath your mask and when you take it off....voila....perfect lips!
4. Mask bracket not for you? Stick to non-sticky balms and liquid lipsticks.
If a mask bracket seems too extreme or too much of a hassle, then my suggestion is to stick with something very sheer like a tinted lip balm, or a matte liquid lipstick with ultimate staying power and minimal transfer. My favorite liquid lipsticks that feel extremely light on the lips and aren't too drying are the Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Lipsticks (fave colors: trophy wife & muse) and the Physician's Formula The Healthy Lip (fave color: fight free red-icals). I've been really into lightweight tinted lip balms as well and my favorites include the Milk Kush Lip Balm (fave color: plushberry), the Honest Beauty Tinted Lip Balm (fave color: summer melon) and the L'Oreal Colour Riche Plump & Shine Lipsticks (fave color: watermelon plump).
Do you have any tips for wearing makeup under masks that I didn't mention above? Post it in the comments to share the wealth with all the beauty lovers out there!
Great ideas! I definitely gravitate towards lip stains like Huda Beauty these days and then top up with some gloss when I take off my mask! Resisting foundation or makeup on my nose has also helped :)
